POLICE SUCCEED IN UNCOVERING SOME BANK THEFT CASES

Jakarta - The Metropolitan Police here on Thursday succeeded
in uncovering several thefts victimizing the clients of Bank Dipo
International, Bank BNI and Bank Mayora.
The police said that Bank Dipo International lost at least Rp
23,200,000 after a group of men, identified as A. Gozali (45),
Sumardiono alias "Umar" (47) and Muhammad Nuh alias "Herman"
(43), managed to mangle the account of a certain Mrs. Tasmiyati
Mulyono.
Sumardiono, the former driver of Mulyono, had obtained his
former employer's bank account number and successfully made a
withdrawal by forging Mulyono's signature.
Along with Gozali, Sumardiono later made a transfer of the Rp
23 million from Dipo Bank to BII, Senen branch, where Gozali on
February 6 opened an account and where the group's modus operandi
was uncovered.
The three are now in the custody of the Jakarta Metropolitan
Police.
Of the Bank BNI, Sudirman branch, case, which was committed
by members of the same group that uses similar mode of opera-
tion, the victim was PT Inti Ganda Perdana which lost Rp 40.5
million.
The case was uncovered when the police was able to obtain
from Muhammad Nuh bills and bank books used in the operation.
The police said that a BNI savings book was confiscated,
along with two BDN savings books, one Motorola hand phone and a
fake transfer application form.
A suspect named Hol is still at large.
On the Bank Mayora, Tomang branch, case, where the money
involved was Rp 87.3 million, a certain Winata Prawira was used
as the victim.
The major suspect, identified as Anwar, is also still at
large.

NO MILITARY DISTRICT CHIEF SUCCESSION UNTIL 1997 GENERAL ELEC-
TIONS

Jakarta - Chief of the Armed Forces (ABRI) Gen Feisal Tanjung
has assured that there will be no succession of high ranking
officials at the military district commands across the country
until the 1997 general elections.
"There will be no succession of high-ranking officials at the
military district commands in the face of the general elections,"
he said here Friday.
He said the ABRI has made all preparations to ensure that the
general elections will be well-implemented.
Asked about the motive behind the recent succession of senior
high officials at the ABRI Headquarters in the runup to the
general elections, he said there is no other consideration except
to secure the organisation's interests.
"Everything has been taken account of and all successors have
long been engaged in the social and political sectors," he said.

E. TIMORESE LEADERS NEED TO MAKE INTENSIVE APPROACHES TO YOUTH

Jakarta - Indonesia's Permanent Representative to the United
Nations Nugroho Wisnumurti on Friday appealed to East Timorese
leaders to make intensive approaches to the province's younger
generation so that they will not easily fall victim to Portuguese
propaganda.
"There is a need to make the younger generation aware that
East Timor's integration with Indonesia is an absolute thing and
that it is impossible to hold a referundum in East Timor," Nugro-
ho said following a meeting with President Soeharto at the presi-
dential palace here.
"The referendum on the status of East Timor which the Portu-
guese government has been campaigning for is only a dream which
has never become a reality," he said.
Because of their youth, East Timor's younger generation still
dreams of unrealistic things, hence the need for such approaches,
he said.
He also said that lodging criticisms against government
policies on East Timor does not necessarily mean opposing the
government.
"We need to increase our sensitiveness. The government should
be serious in hearing the complaints of the East Timorese and
taking the necessary action if the complaints turn out to be
true," he said.
Asked whether Portugal will raise the East Timorese question
at the planned Asia-Europe Summit (Asem) in Bangkok on March 1 to
2, he said he is not in the position to answer such a question.
"But we, with the help of our close friends in the European
Union, are now making efforts to get irrelevant topics excluded
(from the agenda of the meeting)," he said.
The Bangkok meeting will be attended by leaders of seven
ASEAN member countries, China, South Korea and Japan, while
Europe will be represented by leaders of 15 European countries,
such as Spain, France, the Netherlands and Portugal.
